The TechLabz Drive Destruction Methodology

Every hard drive destruction engagement we run follows a four-stage framework — designed to give organisations the same audit-ready outcome regardless of project scale. Whether it's 5 drives from an SME refresh or 5,000 drives from a data centre decommission, the methodology is consistent.

Stage 1 — Risk Profiling & Method Selection

Before any destruction begins, we work with your IT and IG team to map drive types, data sensitivity and any sector-specific compliance requirements. The output is a destruction matrix that tells us which method applies to which device class. You sign off the matrix before we proceed.

Stage 2 — Secure Collection or On-Site Mobilisation

For off-site destruction: DBS-checked drivers, GPS-tracked vehicles, locked transit cages with tamper-evident seals. For on-site: our mobile shredder unit deploys to your premises with a trained operator, witness arrangement confirmed in advance, and same-day Certificate of Destruction issued on completion.

Stage 3 — Certified Destruction

Drives processed against the destruction matrix: NCSC-aligned software wipe for reusable drives, industrial shredding to ≤6mm for end-of-life drives, SSD-specific destruction for solid-state media, degaussing followed by shredding for magnetic backup media. Every drive serial-numbered and logged.

Stage 4 — Documentation, Recycling & Sign-Off

You receive a complete documentation pack: Certificate of Destruction per drive, asset-level disposition list, WEEE waste transfer note, environmental impact summary, and chain-of-custody log. Shredded material is processed for metal recovery through licensed downstream channels with our 99% landfill diversion target.
